Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Bauchi Local Government Area (LGA), located in Bauchi State, faces significant challenges in providing adequate public health services to its residents. Local governance plays a pivotal role in shaping the delivery of public health services, including infrastructure, staffing, and financial resources. The political structures at the local level, along with community participation, influence the effectiveness of health policies, access to healthcare facilities, and the quality of service delivery (Bello & Ibrahim, 2023). Local government authorities are responsible for managing healthcare facilities, distributing medical supplies, and coordinating health initiatives. However, the effectiveness of these functions is often hindered by inadequate resources, governance inefficiencies, and political interference.
This study aims to assess the impact of local governance on the provision of public health services in Bauchi LGA. By examining the role of local authorities, healthcare policies, and resource allocation, this study seeks to identify the strengths and weaknesses in the local health system and propose recommendations for improvement.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite efforts to improve healthcare delivery in Bauchi LGA, there are still significant gaps in service provision, particularly in rural areas. Local governance structures often face challenges such as limited funding, poor infrastructure, and insufficient staffing, which hinder the delivery of quality health services. This study seeks to explore how local governance affects the availability and quality of public health services in Bauchi LGA and identify key barriers to effective healthcare delivery.
